 Lousy repair policy for Sattelite Computers October 27, 2009

My Toshiba Satellite blue screened on me and I was told by Toshiba that I could drop it off at a local authorized repair center. I did this and was told it would take about three days. Two days later the repair center called me and told me that Toshiba will not allow them to work on Satellite Computers and that they had to send the computer to Toshiba, I said okay. Two days after that the repair center called again and told me that now Toshiba will not even allow them to send it back. I will have to drive to the repair center pick up my defective computer call customer service and order a box. It takes two, to three business days for the box to arrive, you then have to put the computer into the box and send it to Toshiba, where it will arrive in another two to three days, then you have to figure it will take another two or possibly more days for them to repair the computer and then another two to three business days for the computer to arrive at your doorstep. So if you can go without your laptop for over a week then you will have no problem with Toshiba's new repair policy for its Satellite computers.
 No BIOS setup access from Linux October 9, 2009

I rate this machine as below average from the point of view of a Linux user. On most machines you can install Linux without losing any functionality. However a FAQ on a Toshiba website states that the only way to access the BIOS setup on the Satellite L5xxx series is to use a Toshiba utility program that runs under the Windows Control Panel. Unlike many other Toshiba laptop models, you cannot get to the BIOS setup by pressing F2 as the machine boots. You can get to a boot priority menu by pressing F12 as the machine boots and select to boot from the DVD drive. So it may be possible to install Linux. (I have been able to run the Ubuntu 9.04 live Cd.) However, it is unclear whether there is any way to retain access to the BIOS except by leaving Windows on the machine and trying to set it up as a dual boot system.

This notebook was for my wife, whose previous one completely died. We tested a similar Toshiba at a major retail store, and she liked the screen size, high resolution, and full-size keyboard. This particular system shares those characteristics. The hardware, while not the absolute latest and greatest, is more than enough for her needs and is still plenty future-proof.
Once out of the box, I powered up the machine to make sure it was functional then immediately proceeded to install Windows 7 on it, mostly to get rid of the bloat/shovelware that's so prevalent on OEM systems. Toshiba has a nearly complete set of Windows 7-compatible drivers on its support web site. The only thing it lacks is some sort of software to control a few of the keyboard functions. For example, the wireless on/off switch, which uses a combination of the fn key + one of the function keys, is not working. I would have preferred a hardware switch, but that's a very minor complaint.
Overall, this is a solid notebook for the money.

Very good value for it's price.
What I like in this laptop:
- big display and "half-FullHD" resolution
- fullsize keybord
- LabelFlash in DVDROM-drive
- porcessor speed
- memory size
- hi-speed WiFi
- possibility to play Fallout3! :)
What I don't like:
- not enough video system perfomance
- web-cam perfomance and resolution
- useless face-recognition system
- MSFT Vista Premium Home (not user frendly OS, requires a lot of time to setup and customizae it)
Still have a problems with this OS.
(I'm a software developer with 15 years expirience of computer's programming)

This model is very good for the price, First off the screen size is beautiful and is great for watching movies has enough RAM and processing power to do picture and home video editing. Stays cool for the size I thought it would be a very hot running laptop but im glad it stays so cool while watching a movie and other high processing programs.
Full keyboard is great for typing up a blog or a review in this case.
The battery life is almost 2 hours on balanced power settings
The Cons - On this system is on the speakers they are not good at all I am a disappointed but I guess you can't get everything you want. I do not like the volume control they should have put a button on the media panel they got Power/Play/Skip/Mute but no volume.
Toshiba loads a lot of Junkware It took me an hour to clean it out before I could use it.
Toshiba offers an upgrade to Windows 7 but wants $12 dollars shipping and handling.
